What hydrolysed actually means

What hydrolysed actually means - Thisisperla

Every collagen drink on the shelf says hydrolysed somewhere on the label, usually in a typeface suggesting it is a benefit. It is not a benefit. It is a description of how the protein was processed before it reached the bottle, and it is worth understanding precisely, because it is one of the few words on a collagen label that means something specific.

The problem hydrolysis solves

Collagen in its native state is a large, triple-helical protein. Large proteins do not dissolve pleasantly into 25 ml of liquid. Left intact, collagen would sit in a vial as something closer to a gel than a drink.

Hydrolysis breaks those long chains into shorter fragments called peptides, using water and enzymes under controlled conditions. The result is a powder that dissolves cleanly and a liquid that can be drunk in one measure.

What the word does not tell you

Hydrolysed says nothing about dose, nothing about source, and nothing about grade. A poorly sourced collagen at a low dose can be hydrolysed just as thoroughly as a well sourced one at a high dose. It is a process, not a quality mark.

The numbers worth reading on a label are the ones underneath it: how many milligrams, from what, and of which type. Perla's elixir carries 10,000 mg of Peptan® Type I marine collagen, sourced from fish skin, in a single 25 ml measure.

Type I, and why marine

Collagen is not one substance. Type I is the form most abundant in skin, bone and tendon; Type II is associated with cartilage. Marine collagen — derived from fish skin rather than bovine hide — is predominantly Type I, which is why it is the common choice for a formulation of this kind, alongside the fact that it suits people who avoid bovine ingredients.

What we are not saying

Nothing above describes what collagen does once you have drunk it. That is deliberate. No health claim is authorised in the European Union for collagen in any form, and Perla makes none. What we can tell you is what is in the bottle, where it came from, and how it was made — which is, in the end, the part you are paying for.

A varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are the foundation of good health.
